When the lead has deteriorated to a point where the safety of the art glass window is in jeopardy due to the collapse or failure of the lead, it is necessary to replace and resolder the lead.  Not only is this deterioration harmful to the window but it also can create health issues as the lead oxidizes. This oxidation is something that happens over the course of many years due to exposure to the elements, age and improper maintenance.  The lead works as a skeleton of the window providing framing for the individual pieces of art glass, attaching the window to the added support bracing and providing points of interest in the stained glass window design.

During the releading phase of a project the panel is completely taken apart, lead hazards properly disposed of, glass cleaned or replaced and reassembled to the art glass windows original beauty.
